Chilean Volcano causes further Australian airport closures – update  

June 22, 2011

 

The volcanic ash plume has drifted over south-eastern Australia, airlines continue to suspend flights and CWT recommends that travelers consider postponing all non urgent travel.  The situation remains fluid and travelers should refer to airline websites for the most up to date information on flight operations, refunds and rebooking.

The latest updates from Qantas and Virgin Australia as at 8am (AEST) are listed below.

Wednesday 22 June

Qantas Airways

Domestic services

  • Services to and from Adelaide will resume from 5.00am
  • Services to and from Canberra will resume from 1.00pm
  • Services to and from Melbourne will resume from 11.00am
  • Services to and from Sydney will resume from 2.00pm
  • Services to and from Tasmania will be suspended today.

International services

  • International Flights from Sydney will resume from 2.00pm. Delays are expected on flights into Sydney
  • International Flights from Melbourne will resume from 11.00am. Delays are expected on flights into Melbourne
  • Services to and from Auckland will be suspended from 9.00am local time and to and from Wellington, Queenstown and Christchurch from 10.00am until further notice
  • Johannesburg destined services will operate with a refuelling stop in Perth until further notice
  • Buenos Aires services destined for Sydney may be subject to a refuelling stop in Papeete until further notice

 

Virgin Australia

Virgin Australia will commence services from:

  • Adelaide from 07.00am (ACST)
  • Melbourne from 12.00pm (AEST)
  • Canberra from 3.00pm (AEST)
  • Sydney from 3.00pm (AEST)
  • Hobart and Launceston is expected to resume from 4.00pm (AEST)

CWT has increased staffing levels for our Emergency Service Centre to provide maximum assistance to travelers however we are currently experiencing increased hold times due to large call volumes.  We would request at this time that all non-urgent travel be sent via email so we can keep the phone lines open to those affected travellers.

Advice for travellers

Travellers should check their airline carriers website before departing for the airport or if contacted by the airline, follow their instructions.  Travellers who have not been contacted by the airline should call their CWT office for assistance.

Travellers with visas expiring should contact their local embassy and advise them of the situation as well as their location.

FYI – update below regarding volcanic ash cloud

Volcanic ash update

With the volcanic ash cloud caused by the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano in Chile continuing to disrupt some Domestic and Trans-Tasman services below, major cancellations expected across the country today.  Below is a summary from the major airlines advising current flights status.

This information is current at time of distribution. As the situation is fluid and constantly changing, CWT will be broadcasting further updates during the day as Airlines make decisions on whether to operate their services. CWT recommends that for the most up to date information on flight operations, refunds and rebooking that you refer to the appropriate airline websites.

Qantas Airlines

www.qantas.com.au

  • All flights to and from Adelaide and Port Lincoln will be cancelled from 6.30am.
  • The following services will operate from Adelaide prior to 6.30am: QF730, QF670, QF660, QF706, QF593
  • All flights to and from Canberra will be cancelled from 12.00 pm.
  • All domestic flights to and from Sydney will be cancelled from 3.00 pm.
  • International services to and from Sydney are currently under review. QF1 Sydney Bangkok London; QF5 Sydney Singapore Frankfurt and QF31 Sydney Singapore London will all depart from Sydney at 1415 today.
  • It is possible that Melbourne may also be affected at some time today; times are still to be confirmed.
  • Johannesburg destined services will operate with a refuelling stop in Perth until further notice.
  • Buenos Aires services destined for Sydney may be subject to a refuelling stop in Papeete until further notice.

Jetstar

  • · Jetstar has cancelled select flights to/from Adelaide today (21 June 2011).

Virgin Australia

  • Virgin Australia has suspended all flight services into and out of Adelaide and Mildura on Tuesday 21 June.
  • All other services are expected to operate, however delays may be experienced in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney

Rex Airlines

  • All flight services into and out of Adelaide have been cancelled until at least midday on 21st June, flights have been rescheduled for this afternoon
  • Morning services between Mildura and Melbourne (vv)  have been cancelled

  • CWT Travel Centre’s are currently experiencing longer hold and email turnaround times due to increased queries relating to cancellations yesterday and would like to thank you for your understanding and patience during this time.
  • All non-urgent travel should be emailed through to CWT so we can keep the phone lines open to those affected passengers.
  • (This would hold true for all travel agents at this time, please use the phone wisely).
